Mocasin Making with Myrna Yellowbird
Local Artisan, Myrna Yellowbird, brought her knowledge and expertise to the Samson Head Start where parents and caregivers with no experience or some experience, could come and make a pair of Tiny Tot Moccasins for their children. Over the course of the workshops, we've received great feedback, good stories and laughter during the workshops. We provided the supplies needed, food/snacks, drinks, and a comfortable space for the participants. We look forward to having Myrna return to teach her other classes in the future.
Lars' Leather Belt Making was a success, we had a full sign-up list but some could not show. We will plan another one in April to accommodate schedules in the evenings or a weekend.
The Treaty 101 Workshop focused on educating, raising awareness, and inspiring our youth about the history of First Nations peoples in Canada pre-Treaty making, Treaty negotiations, etc. Discussions include the Indian Act (1985) as it pertains to the Treaties. Topics also included the history of Treaty Making between First Nations peoples in Canada and the Crown in Right of Canada, and the Treaty relationships.
The Treaty 101 online training was offered through the Google Class platform under the Samson Cree Nation Head Start website for Samson Cree Nation members. It was well attended with over 40 participants and great feedback over three days in May 2025. We had a very knowledgeable facilitator and co-facilitator who shared insights from a leadership, education, and Treaty perspective.
The Samson Head Start Program-FNCFS Workplan aims to offer traditional and culturally appropriate activities and workshops that promote identity, build resilience and independence, and foster community engagement. Samson Cree Nation recognizes the importance of Treaty training and the transmission of this knowledge for our youth, our leaders and our tribal members.
